A little airplane about the size and speed of a large bird buzzes several hundred feet above the scrubby sagebrush landscape near the Idaho National Laboratory test airstrip. There's no human pilot onboard, just a tiny computer autopilot, some sensors and cameras, and a few pounds of fuel.

Robotic planes ("unmanned aerial vehicles") aren't just for security anymore. INL researchers have equipped them with super-sensitive imaging technology to assess conditions that affect ecosystems, croplands or wildfires. Watch this slideshow or read more at http://www.inl.gov/uav.
